Former Illinois Chamber President Doug Whitley speaks on public policy, business at SIU lecture
The second installment of a lecture series, The State of the American
Worker, featured Doug Whitley, former president and CEO of the Illinois
Chamber of Commerce, Friday at the SIU Transportation Education Center.
The event was hosted by The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute.
Whitley
addressed business issues and state government in a lecture titled, The
Public Policy Agenda of the Illinois Business Community. Last week,
Sarita Gupta, executive director of Jobs with Justice, gave the lecture:
How We Build a Better America. Gupta’s viewpoint focused largely on
labor issues, while Whitley gave perspective to contemporary business
struggles.
Whitley, who founded and co-chaired the
Transportation for Illinois Coalition, began his presentation discussing
what he described as a “cornerstone of Illinois’ economy,”
transportation.
“What makes Illinois a great state, is where we’re located.” Whitley said. “We are the largest inland port in the world.” Read more: Southern Illinoisan
