How a Community Pracices Self-Help: The Springfield Angel Network and the Springfield, (Missouri) Area Chamber of Commerce - A non-profit introduction network for investors

The Springfield Angel Network is a non-profit organization interested in introducing entrepreneurs from southwest Missouri to individuals capable of investing financially.

Formed in 2008, the network is a collaborative effort of its members, including the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, the Edward Jones Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation at Drury University and Jordan Valley Innovation Center/Springfield Innovation, Inc. at Missouri State University.

The Springfield Angel Network was created to meet the early capital needs of local university and private-sector entrepreneurs. As an introduction network, it’s designed for “accredited investors” wishing to take an active role in their investment decisions, while playing a critical role in bringing to market exciting ideas generated in university labs and private businesses throughout southwest Missouri. The private capital supplied by angel investors is an important requirement for creating new products, services and jobs in our region.

The purpose of the Springfield Angel Network is to introduce accredited investors to potential funding opportunities through invitation-only presentation events. Springfield Angel Network participants are under no obligation to invest in any particular opportunity, and are not subject to an annual minimum investment. Participants should understand the risks associated with early stage investments, be willing to conduct any and all necessary due diligence, and be financially able to withstand the loss of their investments. Participants interested in a funding opportunity work directly with the entrepreneur and other interested participants to formalize any potential investments.

Individuals interested in the joining the Springfield Angel Network must complete an application confirming their status as an “accredited investor,” defined as a person whose individual net worth, or joint net worth with a spouse, exceeds $1m excluding primary residence; or, a person whose individual annual income exceeds $200k, or whose joint annual income with a spouse exceeds $300k.

Springfield Angel Network investors:
• Are willing to accept higher risks associated with a potentially high return on investment
• Want to take an active role in their investing
• Wish to use their skills and experience to help build business
• Want to contribute to our local economic health by providing access to capital
