Happy Friday #Chamber World! Have a GREAT weekend!

On heels of Foxconn announcement, NE Wisconsin leaders look to lure Amazon to area
As Foxconn announces that it plans to build its massive plant in Mount Pleasant, south of Milwaukee, business leaders in Northeast Wisconsin are hoping they will have a chance to attract another major project from another major company.
Regional leaders says they're looking to make a proposal to bring the second headquarters for Amazon.
The Seattle-based company has a list of amenities a city should have to be considered. The wish list includes:
  • A location with more than a million people
  • A place close to mass transit, with a 45-minute or less commute to an international airport
Cities like Chicago, and Milwaukee are already composing bids.
"It's a very broad scope that they are looking at basically nationwide, so I think they are just trying to narrow the field," said Bob Mundt, the president and CEO of the Fox Cities Chamber.
Fox Cities Chamber, along with other economic development groups in the area, are working together on the bid.
Mundt says there are some challenges the region would have to make.
"There'd be some changes we'd have to make to our transportation infrastructure, utilities infrastructure, those types of things," said Mundt.
"I think Wisconsin is being certified as a good place to do business," said Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt.
Schmitt says the region's workforce would make it an attractive choice for Amazon.
"At the end of the day, it's the people, and I think Wisconsin can offer some of the best employees around," he said.
Schmitt added that competing against big cities might make it tough to land Amazon; however, he points to Foxconn, saying the state won despite competition from bigger cities.
"The fact that we're even confident in putting a bid in and the fact that we landed Foxconn, that is a statewide success and we just want to capitalize on it," said Schmitt. Read more: FOX 11

Foodie field trip: You don't have to go far to enjoy a day of good food — head to Valpo

When looking for a foodie day trip, sometimes you don’t have to travel far. Valparaiso is a perfect example of a great foodie destination in our own backyard. Whether you want an upscale dinner, a casual bite, a beer flight or a sweet treat, you’ll find an array of options to satisfy your craving.

Downtown Valparaiso is a bustling place for shopping and dining. As the county seat of Porter County, there is a traditional square around an old courthouse, but the downtown is also centered around Central Park Plaza, a fantastic civic space that attracts all ages for various concerts, markets and other events and entices families with a splash pad in the summer and ice skating in the winter.

Rex Richards, president of the Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce, noted there have been numerous new restaurants in Valparaiso in the past eight years that have joined longtime eateries in the city.

“In downtown Valpo, we have a couple new restaurants. One of them is a Japanese sushi restaurant called Furin, which is relatively new. Another on Franklin Street across from the courthouse is a restaurant that changed its concept from a more traditional restaurant to one called Rochochet and they make special tacos.”

On the other end of the spectrum, he said Spanish restaurant Don Quijote has been operating in Valparaiso for more than 30 years.

“The owner, Carlos, has been a tremendous promoter of Valparaiso. I was just there and had a wonderful fish dish for lunch that was to die for,” he said.

Richards said a favorite dish of his is a waldorf salad served at Sage.

“It was really phenomenal. Sage is an Italian restaurant. ... I’ve also had some of the entrees there that are really good,” he said. Read more: NWI Times

Lee Lingo, Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce President Resigns

Hopkins County Regional Chamber of Commerce Board Chair Wendy King announced the resignation of its president, Lee Lingo, at a monthly board meeting held today.

“It is with mixed feelings that I present Lee Lingo’s resignation to the Board,” King said in a press release. “Lee has demonstrated his abilities to guide our Chamber forward. We wish him well in his future endeavors and appreciate his willingness to work with us during this time of transition.”

Lingo has accepted the director position with the Kentucky Association of Manufacturers in Frankfort. The board hired Lingo in 2013 following the retirement of Harriett Whitaker.

“It has been my honor to serve our community through the Chamber,” Lingo said. “I’m very proud of the initiatives we have implemented that have helped not only our Chamber grow, but provided better service and support to our industry sectors all across the region.”

King said the local organization is working with the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Executives Association to form a search committee and begin the process for hiring Lingo’s successor. He will continue to work for the Chamber on a part time basis thru the end of October to assist with the transition. Read more: surfKY.com

Bay Area Chamber taps congressional chief of staff as next CEO

The Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has named a congressional chief of staff as its next chief executive officer.

Ryan Tarrant, 39, was selected as the organization's next president and CEO Friday, Aug. 25. He replaces Ryan Carley, who resigned from the position in May after two years on the job.

Tarrant, a Bay City native, was chosen from a large pool of candidates from across the nation for his extensive government and community affairs experience, chamber officials said. He currently serves as chief of staff to U.S. Rep. John Moolenaar, R-Midland, and previously worked for Rep. Dave Camp, R-Midland, and the Michigan Bankers Association.

He officially begins his job with the chamber on Sept. 18.

"In my current role, I travel to Washington a lot and it seemed like a great time for me to take my experiences that I gained outside the community and make sure we have the best possible business climate here that allows us to continue our momentum," said Tarrant.

Tarrant, a graduate of Saginaw Valley State University, said the first few months of his job will be meeting members and finding out what they want to see from the chamber.

Over the past couple years, the chamber has been an active voice on several hot-button issues across the county, including the controversial Wenonah Park pavilion project and making the beach at the Bay City State Recreation Area more accessible to the public. Read more: M LIVE

Chamber delight: Mississippi Power solar facility operating in Hattiesburg

The sun was burning bright Friday morning as dozens of officials cut the ribbon on Hattiesburg's new solar facility, a partnership between Mississippi Power Co. and Silicon Ranch.

The site, located on 450 acres off U.S. 49 South, will generate enough electricity annually to power 6,500 houses.

The 50-megawatt facility features around 200,000 fixed-tilt solar panels that generate direct current, which is converted to alternating current and directed to customers throughout Mississippi Power's coverage area.

"There are not many metropolitan areas that can brag about 50 megawatts of solar energy on the grid within the city limits," said Todd Jackson, vice president of economic development for the Area Development Partnership.

Mississippi Power now provides more than 100 megawatts of energy between the Hattiesburg facility and the one recently opened in Sumrall, Mississippi Power President Anthony Wilson said.

"This makes the Hattiesburg area kind of the epicenter of the whole renewable energy space in Mississippi," Wilson said.

Mississippi Power has another facility at the Seabee base in Gulfport, and a fourth Mississippi Power solar facility is under construction near the Naval Air Station in Meridian.

"As we go forward it is very important for utilities to have a diverse fuel portfolio," Wilson said. "And I think solar is certainly a big component of that."

"It captures the our character as the Hub City," Mayor Toby Barker said. "If you look at the history of Hattiesburg and how we've become the hub of so many things — from medical care to military to higher education to retail to culinary — we're becoming quite the hub for sustainable alternative energy."

The Hattiesburg facility was built and will be operated by Silicon Ranch in partnership with Mississippi Power. Strata Solar constructed the facility, which provided around 350 mostly local jobs during construction. Read more: Hattiesburg American
