Hampton Roads Chamber event:Local defense outlook: It might get worse before getting better

Defense spending drives the economy of Hampton Roads and Virginia, and the short-term outlook could be better. But the long-term view offers reason for hope.
That message was delivered Tuesday to more than 100 business and government leaders at a briefing sponsored by the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce and the Hampton Roads Military and Federal Facilities Alliance.
The short-term outlook is cloudy because a government shutdown is likely in December. That's according to John Simmons, founder of The Roosevelt Group, an advocacy/lobbying firm that goes to bat for the region and state defense community in Congress. Locally, the group works for the federal facilities alliance.
Tuesday's briefing came on the heels of a new Defense Department report that shows the importance of defense spending to Hampton Roads and Virginia.

Newport News ranks 10th nationally in defense spending by location, as determined by defense personnel and contracts, according to the report. The city is home to Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, which builds aircraft carriers and submarines, and the Army's Fort Eustis. Read more: Daily Press

#BestChamber Practices: Linda Rabe, IOM, CCE, President & CEO of the Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce: a personally signed and mailed Membership Renewal note

Thanks John!

Your ongoing Commitment to the Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce means so much to us..to me. Having been at this now for more than 25 years, I've come to deeply value each and every member's renewal check. The chamber staff team, and your peers who serve on the Chamber Board, recognize that renewals are not a given, I am always conscious of the fact that loyalty is contingent on the value chamber leaders experience as members of this powerful network. Most important,  it is built on your trust that we will be focused on serving the needs of those who lead businesses and communities.
Thank you for that trust and ongoing support. We'll do our best to earn them both. If you have suggestions about how we might better do so over the next 12 months I hope you'll call me. My direct line is 718-8466.
Again, thank you!
(Signed)
Linda

Northern Kentucky judges-executive talk about regionalism, economic prosperity and the Brent Spence Bridge at Northern Kentucky Chamber’s Eggs ‘N Issues

The Northern Kentucky Eggs ‘N Issues event Tuesday featured the region’s judges-executive who spoke on a wide range of topics at the Holiday Inn Cincinnati Airport in Erlanger.
Judges-executive Gary Moore of Boone County, Steve Pendery of Campbell County, Stephen Wood of Grant County and Kris Knochelmann of Kenton County presented an overview of their respective jurisdictions and took questions from the audience.
Knochelmann was singled out for his efforts to reform the Kenton County Airport Board into a more inclusive and representative body.Topics included regionalism, the impact of the heroin epidemic in the area and funding for the Brent Spence Bridge replacement. The county leaders also heaped praise on each other and credited the collaborative effort that keeps Northern Kentucky at or near the top in the state for economic growth and prosperity.
Regarding the Brent Spence Bridge, Boone County Judge-executive Gary Moore said that he is opposed to tolls, but all options should be up for discussion.
“We see a lot of finger pointing – its’ a Federal problem, no it’s a state problem, no you are local leaders, you need to come up with a solution – and the finger pointing needs to end,” Moore said. “We need to come together at all levels of government and put some ideas on the table. It’s time to stop saying what we are against and come up with a plan of what we are for.” Read more: Northern Kentucky Tribune

Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce: Building Minority Business Capacity

Minority businesses represent a significant and growing portion of our entrepreneurial economy. They also form the basis of the complex value chains on which corporate success depends. Increasing the share of minority-owned businesses in the region and working to build the capacity of these businesses over the long haul is imperative if we want a vibrant economy and a welcoming community.

“Minority businesses play a huge role in economic vitality because vitality means nothing when an entire group is left out of the picture,” said Marques J Beene, MSW, CEO, Creative Academic Networks (CAN). “Minority businesses have a great opportunity to showcase the many skills and talents their businesses offer and enhance the lives of everyone—of all ethnic groups—around them.”

Not just networking: Greater La Porte Chamber hosting event to build business connections

You have to sell yourself, sell your business, and forge a connection, but you only have two to three minutes to do it.
This isn’t just networking, it’s speed networking and the event hosted by the Greater La Porte Chamber of Commerce will give area buisnessmen and women a chance to square off face-to-face and make new connections in short order.
“A lot of people think it’s just a lot of fun because it’s so fast-paced. You have to get in your little 30-second commercials that you always practice,” said Drew Gesse, Director of Marketing and Communications with the chamber.
The Speed Networking event is being held Tuesday at the Pax Center located on 605 Washington St. in La Porte and will begin at 7:15 a.m.
Gesse said the two- to three-minute time limit will depend upon the turn out. Businessmen and women will get the brief opportunities to introduce themselves and their businesses or organizations before moving on to the next waiting purpose, similar to speed dating but with a focus on expanding and developing business relationships.

“It’s just a good way to meet a lot of new people and make initial connections,” Gesse said, who recommended bringing business cards so further conversation can occur based upon the foundation forged in the initial brief connection. Time will be allotted after the event to allow further mingling to expand on these brief encounters. Read more: Herald-Argus
