Good morning Chamber world! Today is going to be a GREAT day!

Fairfax Chamber, Board of Trade, Prince George’s Chamber to Host DC, Maryland, and Virginia Leaders at Inaugural Capital Region Business Forum

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce (Fairfax Chamber), Greater Washington Board of Trade (Board of  Trade), and Prince George’s Chamber of Commerce (Prince George’s Chamber), announced they will host  Muriel Bowser (D), mayor of the District of Columbia, Terry McAuliffe (D), governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and a senior Maryland state official* for the inaugural Capital Region Business Forum to promote regional cooperation.

The event, scheduled for the morning of December 8 in Arlington, Va., will address opportunities and challenges that affect the District of Columbia, the state of Maryland, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Topics will include:
·         Transportation and interconnectivity,
·         Economic diversification, in light of declining federal expenditures, and
·         Branding the national capital region.

This will be the first time since taking office that three high-level state officials have participated in a joint program of this kind. Each of the region’s chief executives have separately called for a renewed focus on economic development, job creation, and new company formation.

“Acting regionally is critical to how we will make Greater Washington better by improving, recruiting, attracting and growing,” said Jim Dinegar, Greater Washington Board of Trade President & CEO. “These leaders are central to that success.”

“Constructing a reliable transportation network, building workforce capacity, and structuring a trans-boundary collaborative model are essential for regional elevation,” said David Harrington, Prince George’s Chamber President & CEO. “As part of our strategic interest, the Prince George’s Chamber wants to bring together business actors for expanding entrepreneurism and community impact.  This event, we hope, is the beginning of shaping a stronger region.”

“We are thrilled to bring these leaders together to address the issues our region faces,” said Jim Corcoran, Fairfax Chamber President & CEO. “We must work together to plot a course for the future that will grow our regional economy and set us on a path to success for decades to come.”

This event, a joint initiative of the Fairfax Chamber, Board of Trade, and Prince George’s Chamber, will provide the leaders the opportunity to discuss their plans to work cooperatively to bolster the regional economy in an ever-competitive global marketplace.

Rapid City Area Chamber Annual Meeting: Gates Foundation exec pushes education for all

Travis Reindl grew up in small-town Custer, S.D. — population 1,900 — but has now obtained a job in which he can affect the lives of people across the entire world — population 7.2 billion.
As a senior program officer with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has a roughly $40 billion endowment to work with, Reindl has the resources and the imperative to change lives.
His specialty since landing the post in 2013 has been promoting higher education as a way to help people worldwide find stability and good health, and to create a platform on which they can achieve their goals and dreams.
Reindl spoke in Rapid City on Saturday night, and challenged the community and its business leaders to increase the number of adults locally who have a higher education degree or skilled work certificate.
His theme, in a speech before the annual meeting of the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, was that life is a series of journeys, each of which teaches important lessons of humility, determination, and the need for collaboration.
Reindl, who graduated from Notre Dame University and also worked on policy issues at the National Governor's Association, gave a short but engaging and at times funny address to the 320 people present. In it, he focused on the importance of higher education, but also on the need for faith, family, hard work and perseverance — all values he said were rooted in his fifth-generation South Dakota upbringing. Madison the City Chamber event: Break bread with Sister Schubert
Madison the City Chamber of Commerce is cooking up a twist to its typical business seminar. Patricia Barnes – Sister Schubert, herself, the creator of delicious packaged rolls and breads that bear her name – will share her story and offer a cooking demonstration at the chamber’s “Rise to the Occasion.”
The 6 p.m. dinner event, which will be held at Broadmoor Baptist Church, includes Sister Schubert rolls “of course,” chamber director Elizabeth Bryant said.
“Sister Schubert will be telling her story of how it all started with her rolls and how it all evolved,” Bryant said.
Expect an inspirational tale, said Helen Carney, a chamber Ambassador who heard Barnes speak at a luncheon in Tupelo earlier this year.
“We were crying one minute and laughing the next,” Carney said. “She is absolutely wonderful.”
Barnes’ message speaks to both women and men on how she created and grew her business in Alabama.
“It’s a success story for everything in the United States,” Carney said. Read more: Clarion Ledger

Bayfield Chamber event: 2015 Apple Festival draws a big crowd

Temperatures in the low 60s and blue skies greeted huge crowds of visitors attending the premier Wisconsin Fall event, the Bayfield Apple Festival.
“We always try to estimate the crowd, we usually get between 30,000 and 60,000 people at Apple Fest, depending on the weather,” said Bayfield Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Bureau Executive Director David Eades. “Given the weather we had, his year was definitely on the high side of that number.” Read more: Ashland Daily Press

Illinois Chamber of Commerce week in Union County

During Illinois Chamber of Commerce Week, which is Sept. 14-18, the Union County Chamber of Commerce, plans to host a variety of giveaways, including t-shirts, passes to Beggs Family Farm and passes to Chittyville Haunted House.

At the Movie in the Park on Friday, Sept. 18, at the Anna City Park, there will be a drawing for a Union County Chamber of Commerce outdoor blanket. (The chamber’s Facebook page offers daily updates.)

A chamber of commerce is a local organization of businesses, whose goal is to further the interests of all businesses.  Business owners in towns and cities form these local societies to advocate on behalf of the business community.

The first chamber of commerce was founded in 1599 in Marseilles, France. Local businesses serve as the chamber members, and they elect a board of directors or executive council to set policy for the chamber. Read more: The Gazette-Democrat

The board then hires a CEO or executive director, plus staffing appropriate to size, to run the organization.
