Kentucky jumps 45 places in national entrepreneurship rankings

A recent University of Nebraska-Lincoln study shows Kentucky's entrepreneurial environment is improving. The State Entrepreneurship Index ranked Kentucky No. 4 for its ability to create new businesses. Kentucky climbed 45 places from its No. 49 ranking in 2012.

"I think it's a wonderful validation of the energy that has gone into early-stage ventures," said Kent Oyler, CEO and president of Greater Louisville Inc., the metro chamber of commerce. Oyler is a serial entrepreneur and former managing partner of OPM Services Inc., an investment and financial services firm that works with entrepreneurs across the state. Jobs, exports topics at Maysville-Mason County Chamber luncheon

The state of economic growth in the Commonwealth was the focus of Friday's Maysville-Mason County Chamber of Commerce business meeting. The guest speaker was Robin Lee with the Kentucky Cabinet of Economic Development, Business Development Department.

During a PowerPoint presentation, Lee presented statistics on how Kentucky is performing in the area of new jobs, financial investments into new and existing business, what industries lead the job markets, and how small businesses can take advantage of tax credits offered through the Cabinet. Kentucky Chamber president stresses importance of pension oversight

Referring to the state’s unfunded pension liability as a dark cloud over Frankfort, Kentucky Chamber President & CEO Dave Adkisson stressed the importance of oversight to the Public Pension Oversight Committee last week. With billions of dollars at stake, Adkisson suggested the committee strongly consider contracting with a professional investment firm to help provide adequate oversight of the investment of public dollars. His comments followed a formal presentation of the investment returns, which indicated the Kentucky Retirement System (KRS) investment returns were lower than other benchmark funds for the last ten years. Chamber Event: Beer garden comes to NIBROC

NIBROC will see its first beer garden in Sanders Park. Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bruce Carpenter said the chamber applied for a special event license early Monday. State approval came Tuesday, and city approval followed shortly thereafter.- See more at: Times-Tribune

One Southern Indiana chamber chief asks state to help ease toll burden on businesses

The Southern Indiana chamber of commerce is asking state officials to consider changes to traffic and toll plans in an effort to ease the Ohio River Bridges Project's financial burden on local businesses.

The president and CEO of One Southern Indiana, which represents Clark and Floyd counties, sent the suggestions in a July 30 letter to the Indiana Finance Authority, the agency in charge of the project's financing.

Among the recommendations, based on input from chamber members, are limiting the Clark Memorial Bridge to passenger cars and trucks and restricting the span to one-way traffic during rush hour periods, Wendy Dant Chesser wrote. Read more: WDRB.com

Chamber issue: The NLRB attack on McDonald's

Amid the economic doldrums of recent times, the fast-food industry has been one of the biggest job creators. So far this year, it has added employment at a 4 percent rate, which stands to make this the third straight year at that pace. If only the entire economy had done so well.
But no good deed goes unpunished. Last week, the National Labor Relations Board decided that McDonald's will have to play by a brand-new set of rules — and if that decision stands, it could affect a lot of other businesses in fast-food and other sectors. It's a mistake that needs to be reversed before it does real damage. Read more: Chicago Tribune

Remembering David Olson
1956-2014

David Olson left an indelible mark as president of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce these past 23 years. He truly was one of the greatest champions for Minnesota businesses, but also for the chamber of commerce profession. His impact and influence in the local chamber community was felt across the state and across the country.

Some of David’s deepest personal and professional relationships were with local chamber of commerce leaders. Local chambers were his roots. Prior to joining the Minnesota Chamber, he excelled leading the Burnsville and the TwinWest chambers of commerce.

He never forgot where he received his start. The resources and time he offered personally, and that provided by other Minnesota Chamber staff, will not be found by any other state chamber in the country. If local chambers had an “ask,” David responded. He was often a facilitator for local chamber board retreats. He was happy to jump in his car to speak at a legislative breakfast or board meeting. He was a long time participant and instructor and the U.S. Chamber’s Institute for Organization Management and David accompanied local chamber leaders on an annual trip to Washington, D.C.

The impact of his interactions was evident at his funeral as chamber leaders from International Falls to Winona came to pay their final respects. Leaders from across the country were represented from states including North Dakota; Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, North Dakota and Washington, D.C.

The David Olson Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established through the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce Executives (MCCE). Contributions to the fund may be sent to David Olson Memorial Scholarship Fund, MCCE, 400 North Robert Street, Suite 1500, St. Paul, MN 55101.

Chamber Creativity: ’Discover Wisconsin’ discovers Hudson

It was a beautiful weekend to have the film crew from “Discover Wisconsin” in Hudson.
The Hudson Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau has contracted with Discover Mediaworks, the producers of the program, to film a half hour show designed to bring more visitors from across the state and the region here year around. The cost of the production is being paid for over a three-year period with local room-tax dollars earmarked for the promotion of local tourism.

Chamber Technology: What’s Your Mobile [App]etite?

In a few short years, the number of mobile apps has exploded, and the time spent on apps continues to increase. However, one thing hasn’t changed: the number of apps individuals use. The average smartphone owner uses 22 to 28 apps in a month, according to new data from Nielsen. Here are a few highlights from the report:

• U.S. smartphone users age 18 and over spend 30 hours, 15 minutes using apps each month, 65 % more time than they did just two years ago.
• Smartphone owners ages 25-44 use 29 apps, on average, the greatest number of apps per month. Read more: DigitalGov

University of Missouri Extension, Taney County SBTDC, Ozark Chamber partnering to provide business counseling

University of Missouri Extension and the Taney County Small Business and Technology Development Center have partnered with the Ozark Chamber and the Carl G. Hefner Enterprise Center to provide free one-on-one counseling to local businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs in Ozark. MU Extension Business Development Specialist Chrystal Irons began offering free business counseling services on Wednesday, July 23 and then the third Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Carl G.
