William Lo brings small business expertise as new Executive Director to Carbondale Chamber of Commerce
Carbondale william
William Lo is bringing business experience and a love for his hometown to his new position as executive director of Carbondale Chamber of Commerce.
Lo began helping out and interacting with the public in his parents’ restaurant, New Kahala, at nine years old.

“I spent many years supporting and helping my parents with their business. I spent the past couple of years promoting restaurants on social media. It is nice to have the opportunity to promote more businesses,” Lo said.
Lo would like to see businesses in the city flourish. He said the business situation is dire, due in part to the pandemic. Businesses are facing a shortage of workers, while supply issues are causing a shortage of materials and increasing costs.
“I grew up in this town. It is home for me,” he said.

Lo added that during the past couple years, businesses have had to adapt and change to survive. Restaurants, for example, had to adopted technology and find new ways to serve their customers, whether by taking card payments or offering curbside pickup. Read more: Southern Illinoisan

Mike Murphy chosen as next CEO of the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce
Springfield Mike
The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce (GSCC) has hired Illinois State Representative Mike Murphy to serve as its next president and CEO. He will take the helm on Dec. 1. Outgoing president and CEO Chris Hembrough will leave at the end of November to assume a new strategic and business development role with Peerless Cleaning & Restoration Services.

Murphy was elected as a state representative for the 99th District in 2018 and won re-election in 2020. Recent changes to the district maps would have forced him to run against longtime ally Avery Bourne, and Murphy said that he would not seek re-election in 2022 if the new legislative maps were upheld by the courts.

Murphy stated, “The opportunity to lead The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce is extremely exciting and humbling for me. I understand the importance of a vibrant economy and appreciate the hard work that our local businesses do to make Springfield a special place to live. I want to thank Chris Hembrough for the great work he has done and look forward to building on the foundation we have to take Springfield and Sangamon County to even greater heights.”
Murphy was also previously a small business owner, running Charlie Parker’s Diner from 2009-2017, and has served in multiple executive and management roles in private industry throughout his career.
Board chair Mark Donovan said, “Mike’s unyielding advocacy for the business community at the state level, his reputation in our community and his vision for taking the Chamber to the next level made him the ideal candidate for the position.” According to Donovan, the search committee considered 36 candidates from the central Illinois region but were unanimous in their selection of Murphy.
Hembrough said he also shared Donovan and the board’s enthusiasm for Murphy leading the Chamber. “I don’t know of a better person to the lead the Chamber into the future. As a former business owner and executive, Mike certainly understands the challenges and needs of our business community. I have no doubt, he will serve our members and community very well.” Read more: Springfield Business Journal

St. Charles Area Chamber selects Janet Roman as President/CEO

Longtime St. Charles Area Chamber of Commerce member Janet Roman has been named the Chamber’s new President and CEO following the resignation of Jim Di Ciaula last month.

Longtime St. Charles Area Chamber of Commerce member Janet Roman has been named the Chamber’s new President and CEO following the resignation of Jim Di Ciaula last month.
Roman, a past Chamber treasurer and board member, will start in the position Nov. 1. Di Ciaula left his post last month to pursue new challenges. He had been the Chamber’s President and CEO since January 2018.
“She brings a lot of enthusiasm to the job,” said St. Charles Area Chamber Board Chairman Ryan Anderson. “Her involvement as a member, a past treasurer and a past board member definitely gives her a unique perspective on the Chamber. I think it’s going to allow her to relate very well with our members. She’s going to know where they’re coming from because she’s been a member herself. She knows what it’s like on both sides of the fence.”
Roman is the assistant vice president and bank manager at Inland Bank and Trust in Geneva.
More than 50 people applied for the post. Anderson said he was surprised at the number of people from outside the area who applied for the position.

“We actually received a fair amount of resumes from outside of the Fox Valley and even out of state,” he said. “The reach on this was much larger than I expected.”
Anderson said the search for a new Chamber President and CEO took a little longer than he had expected.
“But at the same time, it was more important to hire the best candidate than to hire quickly,” Anderson said. Read more: Kane County Chronicle

The Right Place to open applications for $25K training grants

The Right Place will host a webinar next month to help companies apply for $25,000 in funding from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to offset career training costs.

Grand Rapids-based economic development agency The Right Place said Tuesday, Jan. 18, it will host The Talent Pathways Program Webinar at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, which is an informational webinar for advanced manufacturing and technology companies in West Michigan that might want to apply for training grants.

“As many as 20 advanced manufacturing and technology companies throughout West Michigan will have the opportunity to secure up to $25,000 in funding that will help lower-wage employees earn career-building industry certifications and training,” The Right Place said.

The $540,000 Regional Talent Innovation Grant recently was awarded to The Right Place by the MEDC. The funding will help companies create career pathways in partnership with local training providers and community partners that result in sought-after industry credentials and certifications; access and develop a diverse talent pool; and build a culture of success for low-income employees, according to The Right Place.

The Right Place will accept grant applications from Feb. 2-16.

Webinar registration for those looking to apply for the grant program is available here.
