2019 Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber Foundation Scholarship Program

The Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber, through its recognized 501(c)(3) Foundation, plans to award several scholarships to seniors graduating from area high schools and pursuing postsecondary studies at a community college, four-year accredited university or trade school within the state of Michigan.

Eligible high school seniors must either be employed by a Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber member business, or be an immediate family member of an employee of a Chamber member business. Up to four scholarships valued at up to $2,500 will be awarded on an annual basis.

This is an annual scholarship program authorized by the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber Foundation Board of Directors funded by donations and proceeds from Foundation activities and grants by the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber. Awards will be sent directly to the school of the winner’s choice upon completed student enrollment in that institution.

Applicants must complete the attached application and write a 600-word essay for consideration of the scholarship. No interviews are planned. The Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber Foundation Scholarship Committee will review applications and essays as part of the selection process.

Scholarship winners must use the award during the 2019-20 academic year. Failure to use the scholarship in a timely fashion will result in forfeiture of the award. These scholarships are open to full-time and part-time students. Financial need will not be factors in the selection process.

For more information, call Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber Foundation President Joe Bauman at (248) 430-6135, or email at joeb@bbcc.com.

St. Mary Medical Center CEO Janice Ryba Honored as Business Person of the Year by Hobart Chamber of Commerce

“Healthcare is about everyone working together as a team for the benefit of patients,” St. Mary Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Janice Ryba explained to business leaders at a recent chamber event. “Our vision is to be an exceptional choice for high quality healthcare in the communities we serve.”
Ryba’s passion for excellence, her persistent focus on community partnerships and outreach and the hospital’s collaboration with local school districts and career centers, prompted the Hobart Chamber of Commerce to name Ryba Business Person of the Year for 2019. The award was presented at the Chamber’s annual recognition dinner on March 1.
Ryba credits the honor to the hospital’s physicians and clinical staff, to her administrative team and to St. Mary Medical Center’s many support staff and volunteers.
Ryba first brought passion and determination with her to St. Mary Medical Center when she became CEO in 2007. Since then, she and her administrative team have established the hospital as a regional leader in healthcare excellence.
St. Mary Medical Center has been recognized in recent years for its high quality care and outcomes in cardiology, neurology and stroke care, orthopedics, oncology, maternity care, bariatrics, vascular care, robotic surgery and other patient services, as well as for overall patient experience, care and safety.

Major achievements include construction of the $17 million, 55,000-square-foot Valparaiso Health Center in 2013, expansion of services at the Portage Health Centers in 2014 and the hospital’s addition of a $40 million Surgical Pavilion and ICU in 2015. Last year, St. Mary Medical Center, in collaboration with its physician network, Community Care Network, Inc., opened its South Valpo Immediate Care, Family Practice and Physical Therapy locations on US 30 in Valparaiso. Mississippi Scholars’ challenge: ‘Do something great’

Lincoln County’s Mississippi Scholars — all 169 of them — walked away with more than $115,000 in scholarship money Sunday to help them pursue their dreams. The exact amount was $118,400, which came from colleges and businesses, and is part of the recognition to the graduating seniors for years of hard work and dedication.

Students from Brookhaven High School, Brookhaven Academy, Mississippi School of the Arts, Bogue Chitto Attendance Center, Enterprise Attendance Center, Loyd Star Attendance Center and West Lincoln Attendance Center were honored during an hour-long ceremony at Easthaven Baptist Church, which was followed by a reception for the honorees, their families and scholarship sponsors. Some of the students were part of the Mississippi Scholars Tech Master program, which honors students who not only completed the rigorous academic regime but added career-tech classes as well. More than 70 percent of the jobs in Mississippi are skilled-labor positions, said volunteer Kenny Goza. Since 2005, when Goza and Kay Burton with the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce started the program here, more than 1,500 students have been recognized and earned more than $1.5 million in scholarships. Mississippi Scholars’ goal is to build up students starting in the eighth grade and give them tools and encouragement that will take them on to bigger and better things after high school.
