Gov. Gretchen Whitmer brings road show to Cadillac

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer opened her remarks at the Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce’s 42nd Governor’s Breakfast by leading with her bipartisan bona fides and connections to local Republicans.

Republican Gov. Rick Snyder told her it was essential to come to the breakfast, she said.

Her stepson is working for McCurdy, Wotilla and Porteous, a Cadillac-based law firm with close ties to the Republican Party.

She’d even stayed the previous night at the home of Dave Porteous, the Reed City-based attorney and notable Republican.

Whitmer, a Democrat who earned just 35.7 percent of Wexford County’s votes in the gubernatorial election, called Republican Congressman John Moolenaar, who represents Cadillac in the U.S. House of Representatives, a friend and stressed the importance of making friendships across the aisle.

Whitmer then moved on to her budget — which she calls a a statement of values, citing Michigan’s middle-class legacy.

“We’ve stopped investing in ourselves,” she said. “We can make a bold decision today.”

The governor launched a slideshow that detailed Michigan’s spending habits and the goals of her controversial budget.

Rep. Daire Rendon later called it Whitmer’s “road show” that she’s been sharing across the state on her “Road to Opportunity” campaign.

Whitmer is working to drum up support for her 45-cent gas tax.

It’s necessary, the governor said, because Michigan has spent decades avoiding investments in infrastructure, taking money from the school aid fund to fill potholes, harming students and failing to rebuild roads. Read more: Cadillac News

Multimillion-dollar venue promises to bring 'a day at the races' to Oak Grove

A new multimillion-dollar horse racing and entertainment venue thundered out of the starting gate Tuesday with the groundbreaking of the $150 million Oak Grove Racing & Gaming facility in Oak Grove.

The state-of-the-art facility, being constructed by Churchill Downs Inc. in partnership with Keeneland Association, the world's largest thoroughbred auction company, will feature live horse racing and horse racing machines as part of a massive new development off Fort Campbell Boulevard.

The venue will include a harness race course, horse stables, horse racing gaming machines, a 128-room hotel, a grandstand, an outdoor amphitheater and an equestrian center.

Historic moment for Oak Grove

Oak Grove officials call the moment historic.

Oak Grove Mayor Theresa Jarvis believes this is a turning point for the town, telling the crowd assembled at Tuesday morning's groundbreaking that the "new racing and entertainment venue will put our city on the map."

She pointed out the tourism and economic growth that the facility would bring to the area, along with the cultural opportunity involved in bringing Kentucky's $4 billion horse racing industry to Oak Grove.

"This investment gives our community the chance to be part of the culture of horse racing in Kentucky," she said. Read more: Leaf Chronicle

Kelli Pendleton, the president/CEO of the Christian County Chamber of Commerce, was equally enthusiastic.

"This venue is nothing short of historic. The facility will be cutting edge. We have two iconic brands representing a major industry in Kentucky coming to your backyard," Pendleton said.

Christian County Judge Executive Steve Tribble was also effusive in his praise of the benefits the project would bring to Oak Grove.

Help wanted in Wisconsin: Stagnant labor force slowing economy
While Wisconsin’s economy remains strong and manufacturing is the No. 1 industry, it does face some threats, foremost, finding employees to fill jobs.
Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce President and CEO described the state of manufacturing in Wisconsin to Waunakee Area Chamber of Commerce members at the Chamber’s April 3 Wake Up Waunakee forum, explaining the labor crisis and what can be done.
Some threats to Wisconsin manufacturing are global and political, including tariffs which have increased steel costs and the price of doing business. Trade disputes are another, Bauer said, noting that a replacement is needed for NAFTA since Canada and Mexico are where most goods are traded.
But the challenge of finding workers is shared by every industry.
“I can’t think of a sector of the economy that is not having trouble finding people. About 70 percent of our members at WMC are having trouble finding workers right now,” Bauer said. “And if you look at the demographics of the state, it’s not going to get any better any time soon.”
Data from the Applied Population Lab shows that between 2010 and 2040, the state will see a 0.1 percent increase in the labor force.
“I used to say that’s economic stagnation; in fact, that’s economic contraction. That is a significant problem,” Bauer said.
Declining birthrates and migration patterns have added to the need for workers. Retiring adults are moving to places with lower or no income tax, along with warmer climates, such as Florida and Arizona, Bauer noted.

Overall, the state’s population has grown but moving in are older adults rather than people of prime earning age, impacting the local tax and state tax base. Read more: HNG News

Prince William Chamber Stands Against Doubling of “Tech Tax” Rate

“TECH TAX” DEFEATED
PW Chamber and Business Community Defeat Massive Tax Increase

Manassas, VA – Tonight at a special Board of County Supervisors Meeting, Supervisors Nohe, Lawson, Angry and Anderson voted against a measure that would have led to a massive tax increase on over 4,000 businesses in Prince William County.

The measure would have increased operating costs, potentially limited a business’ ability to invest in new technology and would have devastated economic development in the region.

“This is not just a victory for the Prince William Chamber, the Technology Industry and the over 4,000 businesses that would have been impacted by this massive tax hike. This is a win for the entire region and says that despite political pressure we have leaders who understand and want a stable and predictable business environment," said Ross Snare, Director of Communications and Government Affairs for the Prince William Chamber of Commerce.

Snare went on to say, "We need to work together to make the Prince William Region the best place for businesses to want to come and grow. Supervisors Nohe, Lawson, Angry and Anderson showed us tonight that we have the leadership to accomplish that. We at the Chamber look forward to collaborating with ALL the Supervisors to make the Prince William Region the best place to live, work, play and do business!"
